SUMMARY:Tunisian Intensive with HABIBA
DESCRIPTION:Cost:\n$70 USD\n\nPay Pal links are up! Don’t miss the Early Bird price\, http://bintbeled.com/event/tunisian-intensive-with-habiba-of-philadelphia/\n\nTunisia has a richly mixed cultural heritage that includes Phoenician\, Berber\, Roman\, early Christian\, Islamic and Jewish elements. The folkloric Tunisian style is tribal and earthy and features horizontal twisting of the hips and pelvic movements. The dancer executes twisting movements to increasingly faster music and sometimes dances with scarves or a pot balanced on her head.\n\nRaqs al Mharem / Bou Nawara\n-Scarf Dance\nOriginally a flirtatious cafe dance\, it took on a more patriotic meaning when dancers started to use a red and a white scarf (the colors of the then secret Tunisian flag) in a show of support for the independence movement in the 1950’s. With independence this became the signature dance of the Tunisian National Troupe.\n\nWorkshop includes:\n–Intensive Overview of Tunisian folkloric dance technique\n-Rhythms\n-Costuming-how to wrap the melia\n-Full scarf dance choreography\n\nMusic available for purchase\n\nNotes will be provided\n\nNote: Tunisian dance is hard on the balls of the feet– wear a dance shoe.\n\n11-1 Tunisian instruction\n\n1-2 Lunch\n\n2-4 Tunisian instruction\n\nHabiba is internationally recognized as a performer\, choreographer\, teacher and authority on dances of the Middle East. She has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad in nightclubs and on concert stages. She has done extensive fieldwork in Egypt and Tunisia. She is an outreach lecturer for the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and a Fellow of the Middle East Center of the University of Pennsylvania and author of numerous articles for national magazines. The International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (IAMED) voted her Ethnic Dancer of the Year 2001.
