Nutrition Advice from Lana Zaila

For the last 6 years I’ve been working in Nutrition. I have experience working in over 8 countries, including Canada, UK, USA and Dubai. I have worked along side nutrition experts and with leading hospitals, associations and corporations. I am also certified in kinesiology, health coaching and psychology. The larger part of my career is related to Medical Nutrition Therapy. As it stands, I am the only specialised therapist at my workplace.

What makes you unique from other qualified people in your field?

My huge appreciation for gourmet food allows me to understand my patients more. In addition, I’m a businesswoman who runs several companies as well as being a dietitian. I believe this really supports me to incorporate a more practical approach to my programs. All of my programs are scientifically based. I adopt a flexible approach that enables me to form personalised plans for my clients. I view the pattern of eating as a relationship between food and the person. Therefore, I believe it’s crucial to adopt an individualistic approach. This leads to more successful outcomes.

For Arab women, particularly Lebanese women, what are the particular nutritional problems that they face?

Definitely diet-related issues such as heart and bone problems, obesity, cancer and diabetes. These have all become the most problematic and present health problems, especially for Lebanese women. In addition, mineral deficiencies and a lack of vitamins are also a big issue. Eating disorders and body issues are also starting to be very problematic.

What is the underlying cause for these issues?

These health issues are a result from a combination of under and over nutrition. Also, nutrient centred related theories that have become famous often promote misleading or extremely false information that hinder the status of Arab countries when it comes to health and nutrition.

What’s your key piece of advice to help solve these issues?

I think the main thing that can be done is for an individual to pre-set their weekly eating and exercise plans to prevent the gut eating of bad food. Contacting professionals whom are qualified will also help you monitor yourself and avoid making too many mistakes.
