Women Hack Syria – San Francisco, CA

July 30, 2016 @ 10:00 am - July 31, 2016 @ 4:00 pm

When families arrive in a different country, ensuring that they get proper information in a language they can understand is vital. Interpreters are in short supply, and the team on the ground needed a solution to share accurate and accessible information. We partnered up with UNHCR, Mercy Corps, volunteers from Google, and Translators Without Borders to develop an app called “Translation Cards” to make sure refugees are not lost in translation. The app is already available on Google Play Store, but this is an on-going project that will benefit from an extra help. And this is where (and why!) we come in.Join our female-led, hackathon to discover more about life in camps and to hack tech for good.

There will be two components that need work:

1) The Android application itself using Robolectric for unit testing on a SNAP-CI deployment pipeline
2) A WebApp for creating translation card decks using Java on Google App Engine

This event is open to all, with childcare provided. Bring your skills and help us spike on a few stories!
