Arabic Vocal Workshop + Concert (DTLA) in Los Angeles
October 9, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$20Event Navigation
Studio Arab-esque in Downtown Los Angeles is pleased to host a special two-hour vocal workshop followed by a live performance.
Led by critically acclaimed vocalist and vocal coach Shelley Thomas, the vocal workshop includes instructions and demonstrations on maqamat (melodic modes in Arabic music), pitch precision, ornamentation, storytelling, and improvisation.
Together we will explore maqamat (microtonal scale systems), pitch precision, ornamentation, storytelling, improvisation, complex rhythm, vocal tambre, and melodic ideas in classical Arabic music. We will explore the muwashahat song form, and compare the differences between Levantine and North African styles of singing, as well as Greek, Hindustani, Turkish, and Persian modes. Your body is your instrument! Therefore, the whole body is involved in producing pure sound. We will build a strong foundational knowledge of healthy vocal technique using posture, breathing, ear training, energetic awareness, and core strengthening exercises. We will also discover the importance and power of rhythmic understanding paired with singing. The result will be notable development of your voice with confidence and control over every note, without stress. You will be able to give consistent, natural vocal delivery with joy, emotion and ease. You will learn to unlock your own brilliant creativity via improvisation, and learn to sing beautiful traditional Arabic songs, equipped with technical and contextual understanding.
Workshop will be held from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Workshop fee is $20 per person and space is limited. Pay at the door with advanced reservation by emailing arabesqueonmain@gmail.com or call 213-703-4084.
Following the workshop, Shelley will perform with accompaniment on the oud (Arabic lute) by Clarissa Bitar and violin by Sachi Yoshimoto from 8:00pm to 9:30pm. Donations accepted. Space is limited. Reserve a seat by emailing arabesqueonmain@gmail.com and RSVP with the names and number of attendees. You will be sent a door code for entry.
The Studio is located in the Canadian Building on the corner Main Street and Winston Street in the Old Bank District section of Downtown Los Angeles. Street parking is typically free all day on Sunday and is often readily available in the neighborhood. Paid garage parking is available across the street, or at nearby lots.
