Islamaphobia or Inclusion? – Discussion in Leichhardt

FILEF and the Greens NSW Multicultural Committee invite you to a discussion evening to raise awareness on Islamophobia in Australia and on how to overcome it. The evening will include a short film, speakers and a Q&A, as well as refreshments.
Speakers:
- Mehreen Faruqi – Greens MP in the NSW Legislative Council. Pakistani born, is the first Muslim woman to be a member of an Australian parliament, elected after a 25-year career as a professional engineer and academic, in Australia and internationally.
- Lucia Sorbera, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Arabic Languages and Cultures at the University of Sydney, historian specializing in women and gender, focusing on Egyptian Women’ political activism, member of the Middle East Studies Association.
- Saman Shad, writer of plays, radio drama and short stories. She has had her work broadcast on the BBC, performed in theatres in the UK and Australia and published in anthologies.
- Nasser Alkhateeb, from Islamophobia Watch Australia, a not-for-profit organisation that encourages to report incidents as they occur by a smartphone app, so as to address psychological and legal issues that may arise from an attack.
Entry by donation – enter via Norton St or Balmain Rd to the Forum Plaza, the Cultural Centre is on one side of the Piazza. Parking underneath.
