About the artists:

• Shadia Mansour (Palestine)

Raw and astute, Shadia has emerged as one of the leading voices in the Arabic Hip-Hop scene. Born in the UK to Palestinian parents, she has been highly active in both music scenes allowing her to establish her unique footprint as an artist. She has been featured on tracks with DAM (Palestine), Arabian Knightz (Egypt), as well as artists from France and the UK, as well as touring across the US, opening for Busta Rhymes and Mobb Deep at the legendary Palladium Club in New York. In 2009, Shadia toured Holland on a sold-out 4 city tour with a 200-piece orchestra and a children’s choir, for a project called “Symphony Arabica”. Most recently, Shadia appeared as a guest on The Narcicyst’s 2009 self-titled album, on the track “Hamdullilah“, and on Lowkey’s remake of “Long Live Palestine“.

• Rafeef Ziadah (Palestine)

Rafeef uses language to narrate, inspire and pull apart stereotypes. Her poems We Teach Life, Sir and Shades of Anger went viral online within days of their release. Her new album, released in November 2015, features an exciting blend of poetry and music with original compositions from Phil Monsour.

• Malikah (Lebanon)

Malikah  (Queen in arabic), was born in Marseille, France in 1986. Raised in Beirut under the shadow of war, Malikah first hit the Lebanese hip hop scene at the tender age of 16, showing early signs of success, working with EMI Arabia in 2003 after winning a hip hop competition. Malikah has established herself as the”Queen of Arab Hip-Hop” stunning audiences throughout the Arab world with her hard-hitting Arabic-language rhyme-style, and becoming the first Arab female MC to reach NRJ radio network’s top 20 billboard chart in the Middle East. Malikah has performed on stage with or opened for some of the biggest names in the music industry including Snoop Dogg, Guns and Roses, and Damon Albarn and more.

• Eslam Jawaad (Syria)

Wissam Khodur, better known as Eslam Jawaad – a rapper of Lebanese-Syrian origin. His debut album, The Mammoth Tusk, was released in 2009. The album was considered an international advancement for local Arabic hip-hop as it featured support from a number of high profile acts including Damon Albarn (Gorillaz/Blur), De La Soul, The Rza / Gza / Cilvaringz (Wu-Tang Clan), Focus… (Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment), Rude Jude / Lord Sear (Shade 45), and ‘Arap’ band-mate Shadia Mansour. Eslam was the first Arabic Hip-Hop artist to create and record tracks in classical Arabic known as ‘foos-hha’ and hence is recognized as the father of the style he coined as “Foos-Hop”.

• Stormtrap Asifeh (Palestine)

Stormtrap is a rapper and beatmaker from Palestine. His lyrics deal with different themes inspired mainly by his personal experiences in Palestine and life abroad. Asifeh’s music consists of rap vocals, electronics, field recordings, samples, hip-hop beats, and experimental material.

Asifeh co-founded the former Ramallah Underground collective (2003-2009). He has performed in cities around the world: Vienna, London, Melbourne, Amman to name a few. Asifeh’s debut album “Iradeh” came out in 2012. Since then Asifeh has been releasing singles and collaborations online, with works featured on albums of fellow artists. Asifeh is currently working on his next album, which is due early 2017.

• Dj Missy Ness – مسي ناس  (Tunis)

Missy Ness is an artist with an insatiable curiosity living between Paris and Tunis. From Tunisian roots, she grew up in Paris, and started table-turning at the age of 16. First female deejay in Tunisia, she is renowned there as one of the pillars of the underground and alternative scene. Her music, intimately related to the urban cultures, with a specific focus on Maghreb and Middle East. Her sets are made up to build an atmosphere more than a style.
