World Artists Experiences: Syrian Trio and Art (MD)

World Artists Experiences, in partnership with the Embassy of Syria, is pleased to present the Hewar Trio for four concerts in Maryland. These concerts feature the highly talented and world renowned Syrian musical trio Hewar along with other Syrian artists. Hewar means “dialogue” in Arabic. It transcends barriers of musical disparities and misconceptions by drawing from an array of musical traditions such as Arabic, jazz, opera and classical offerings. Their music blurs the lines between the improvised and composed and the traditional and contemporary.

The performers, all natives of Syria, include Mr. Kinan Azmeh, clarinetist, Ms. Dima Orsho, soprano, and Mr. Issam Rafe, playing the bass and oud, a guitar-like instrument. The program will be narrated by Dr. Enass Khansa, a former diplomat and academic with expertise in intercultural exchanges.

Since their first concert in Damascus in 2003, the trio has performed throughout Europe, Japan, the Middle East and the United States. Mr. Azmeh and Ms. Orsho are members of cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.

In addition to the concert, there will be a display of paintings by the Syrian artist Mr. Emad Hemede. Also, prior to Hewar’s performance a short film by a Syrian filmmaker will be shown starting at 6:30 p.m.
