A Celebration of World Music, Dance, and Poetry in Dallas

September 25, 2016 @ 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm

$15 - $20

In celebration of International Peace Week, Unity on Greenville, a community of loving, inclusive spirituality, presents “Declare World Peace: A Celebration of World Music, Dance, and Spirituality” –] focusing on the theme of peace and tolerance across lines of class/caste, creed, and community. The concert is co-presented by  Sangeet Millennium, and M&M (Mindfulness & Meditation) Series. It is co-sponsored by Mystic Mandala and Dhyana Yoga.

This multidisciplinary concert features the Dallas and Austin-based Indo-jazz-world fusion project Sangeet Millennium Ensemble with special guests Eastern soul songstress Nagavalli, new music group Impending Bloom Floating Ensemble, contemporary Arabic musicians Jamal Mohamed and Jonathan Jones, Odissi dancer from India Sanchita Bhattacharya, and Argentine folklorico singer Federico Bozas.

Sangeet Millennium Ensemble, founded in 2006 in Austin by sitarist, teaching artist, and ethnomusicologist Amie Maciszewski, seamlessly defies sonic boundaries, dynamically blending traditional South Asian melodies– classical, devotional (both Hindu and Sufi Islamic), and folk-derived–with jazz/world grooves, conjuring up a sound that is both contemporary and reminiscent of earlier fusion projects like Shankar Family and Friends, Jan Garbarek’s Ragas and Sagas, and the work of jazz great Ornette Coleman. Meditating on the unexpected, this collective emits sounds that have been described as “elegantly vibrant”– lyrical, sometimes a bit eccentric, but always distinctly soulful.
